5th August, 2007 was Spitfire Day at the Imperial War Museum, Duxforf. As a treat for being a very hardworking boy, Robert was taken to visit Duxford. In 1938, Duxford was the first RAF station be receive the then new Spitfire fighter. It was also the home of the 'legless' fighter pilot ace - Douglas Bader and played an important part in the Battle of Britain. Robert knew that the tank being on show at the entrance is an example of the Comet tank. He had photographs with the Spitfire and also the Concorde which was exhibited in the new AirSpace Hall. Robert had the chance to get into the Concorde to see what it is like inside.
We arrived at Duxford at 09:00 which was early as doors were scheduled to open at 10:00. However, the car park was filling up. In the event, doors opened at 09:45. We visited all the 5 hangers and also the American Aircraft Museum which had a hugh B52 bomber. Robert splahed out on a pair of spy glasses. These are sunglasses that allow the wearer to see behind. He paid £3 for them. Dad bought Robert a model Spitfire and also 2 DVDs The first was the film "Reach for the Sky" about Douglas Bader. Dad had read the book when he was about 10. The second was the film "Battle of Britain". As Robert was getting tired, we did not stay for the flying of the Spitfire which was to take place at 15:30. After a quick lunch and Dad and Robert left for home at 14:30. It was a long but fun and glorious day out. |
