Ngai Tou Dee
Grand father and Grand mother always had a
great deal of interests in our academic achievements - they were aware of the
importance of education as a means to social mobility.
Grand Father gets very stressed whenever one
of us was about to sit an important examination. If he perceived (wrongly most
times) that a errant grandchild was not concentrating on his/her studies he
would shake has head in despair and predict that the grand child in question
would fail miserably.
However, when the results are announced and
the grand child does well - he would beam and nodding his head wisely would say
over and over again, "Ngai Tou Dee." which in Hakka means I knew
he/she would do it.
