Two Songs

Since recalling, last week on 4 July 2000, the Cradle Song that Mamma and Papa sang to us and which has become the song of the family through the years, into the third generation, the tune and the words have stayed with me. I found myself endlessly singing it softly. My Chang Story #10 of 6 July about Papa evoked powerful feelings and sharpened the ever-present memories of all the strands of Papa’s and Mamma’s family, closely knit strands, entangled knots sometimes. This morning I wakened to the Cradle Song still in my mind but the words were slowly changing. It became a song of farewell to Papa and of thanksgivings for him and for Mamma. I have written it down here.

The story today is ‘Two Songs’. The first has already been heard but it is repeated here, with a Chinese title. The new song tells an old story. The English translation of its title captures the essence of the Chinese and is not a word-for-word translation. The songs have to be read in Chinese, and so Didi#1 Rene will be mailed a print-out for posting on the Chang website. I am very happy to post copies to those who wish to have the Two Songs in their entirety – the words in Chinese with the transliteration and translation.
